Several small outer islands are privately owned. Necker Island, a 74-acre hideaway in North Sound, is one. Owned by Sir Richard Branson, it houses a luxurious resort that can accommodate only 26 guests. Individual reservations are not an option, for Necker is available only to groups. Corporate meetings and intimate weddings are the norm here. Buildings peek out from the colorful tropical plants and trees as your ferry approaches the island. All the buildings resemble Balinese temples. There are 10 rooms in the Great House, including a master suite with a rooftop terrace and Jacuzzi. Three other pavilions nearby have one-bedroom suites with open-air sitting areas and dining rooms.
The Great House terrace and dining areas are where guests gather for cocktails and to enjoy the meals prepared by a gourmet chef. Menus are heavy with local fish, fresh fruits and vegetables (special requests honored) and all meals are served informally. There are often beach barbecues and theme nights. There is a sushi bar too. Necker has two tennis courts, two pools, and three beaches, one of which has an aqua-trampoline. Guests can snorkel over nearby reefs or sail to others nearby. There are windsurf boards, sailboats, kayaks and water skis. The newest addition is the spa, built into a cliffside.
The Great House lounge has comfortable sofas and oversized chairs where guests can read, watch a DVD on a large-screen TV (none in guest rooms) or play board games or pool. The staff is large, friendly and helpful. The dress code at dinner is casual chic.
